DNS Record Types Reference

Understand A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, CAA, NS, SOA, SRV, and PTR records.

Record Purpose Example use
A Maps a name to IPv4 example.com → 192.0.2.10
AAAA Maps a name to IPv6 example.com → 2001:db8::10
CNAME Aliases one name to another www → example.com
MX Mail exchanger and priority Route email to provider servers
TXT Arbitrary verification/policy text SPF, DKIM, site verification
CAA Restricts certificate authorities Permit selected CAs to issue certificates
NS Authoritative name servers Delegates a DNS zone
SOA Zone authority and timing data Serial number and refresh values
SRV Service location and port Voice, chat, and directory services
PTR Reverse address lookup IP address → host name
